About Pinkney Construction - Commercial and Residential Building Contractors - Durham, North East & UK

Pinkney Construction today enjoys an excellent reputation that has been earned over approaching half a century of successful operation. Ours truly is a family-based business operation now spanning four generations. From humble beginnings almost 50 years ago, we have now become a major force in large construction projects such as extensive housing and industrial projects for local authorities. But we have not forgotten our history and have retained separate specialist divisions and departments including building contractor services for domestic residential house construction projects. Indeed we retain a full range of services with an approach that no job is too large or too small.

Established in 1969, Joe Pinkney began by borrowing £400 from his father, Joe Pinkney senior, who himself had started business with only one excavating machine which he hired out to local authorities to do road and building site work. Joe used the money he borrowed to purchase an excavating machine and, like his father, began hiring out to local authorities. After a while they joined forces and working together the company quickly grew.

This expertise with machinery continues even today with the business owning all of its plant machinery. This gives us an edge over our competitors who have to hire or sub-contract machinery work.

The company, based at Helme Park, is now run by Joe's son, Richard Pinkney. We now employ 23 full time staff and approximately 20 sub contractors from the local area and offer a wide range of building and plant services... everything from foundations to chimney pots and our business is not confined to the domestic housing market. Over the years Pinkney Construction has been involved in numerous commercial building works, winning contracts that include construction and development in new towns like Washington in Tyne and Wear, building night clubs and warehouses, extensive renovations to listed buildings, extensions and conversions for the pub and hotel trade.

The company employs traditional craftsmen for which we have become particularly renowned, as well as being a one-stop-shop by being able to do all elements of building work from groundworks to brickwork, stonework and steelwork... and including a comprehensive plumbing and electrical services, a complete roofing service, decoration and flooring... in fact, everything from design to build.

With the implementation of new disability laws, we also employ dedicated disability access teams who are experts in the installation of disability access, such as ramps, handrails and wet floor shower areas. And with the government focus now on renewable energy we have been involved in the construction of a number of wind farms in conjunction with the likes of EDF, EON and REPOWER UK.

By far the best asset of Pinkney Construction is our team of skilled craftsmen who work for us. Employees are valued and it has led Richard to spend many hours bringing the company up-to-date with new health and safety regulations, employee legislation and led to the company achieving the prestigious 'Investors in People Award'. All new employees are given a complete induction and welcome pack, helping them to integrate into our friendly business that really is family orientated.

Richard's young son, Cameron, is already showing an interest in the work that consumes the family seven days a week and is well on his way to becoming another workaholic. He likes nothing better than being with his granddad Joe when he is working.

As part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, the company opened smart new office premises at our base at Nest Park Farm, Helme Park. It boasts a kitchen and rest room for workers as well as conference rooms among its increased office space. The views up the dale are outstanding and impress visitors from outside the area, as well as locals who admire the spectacle.

The company takes very seriously its support of the local community, and has helped several local organisations and charities, including sponsoring the newly founded Wolsingham Football Club. It continues to support Weardale's favourite newspaper, the Weardale Gazette, by sponsoring the fortnightly crossword and the children's word search.

Pinkney Construction is a success story that is set to continue despite the recession the country faces over the next few years. It has ensured its diversity of skills will always be in demand in both the domestic and commercial building trade.
